Tech to Consider During Your Remodel

Renovating your home is most often done to increase the functionality of the home: more storage, more energy efficient windows, opening up the living the space.

But there are other things to consider as well, including how well does your home support modern technology? Here are a few things to consider when you plan out your home improvement project.

    • WiFi
Internet connection is key for many people. Do you plan to use WiFi in your home? Make sure you have the appropriate wiring for your router and depending on the size of your home, an extra hot spot.

    • Signal Boosters
If your basement is going to be your home theater, a home office, or a homework area for the kids, consider adding some signal boosters. Older homes may have patchy WiFi in areas with heavy plaster.

    • USB Outlets
Make any outlet a charging station! Adding USB outlets gives you extra options throughout the house and is a hot feature for resale.

    • Whole Home Systems
Systems like Nest are becoming increasingly popular. These systems allow you to control everything from the thermostat to the stereo to the door locks. During a renovation is a great time to install systems like this, especially if you happen to be updating the air conditioner!

    • Wiring
Technology is moving toward wireless, but high speed outlets, including HDMI ports are still a great option, especially in older homes where wireless signals may be harder to transmit consistently.

Many of these changes are subtle, so they can even be added to historic homes without making big, noticeable changes. Talk to your contractor about high tech options, when the work is done you may be able to “Netflix and chill” in any room of your home!
